The Four Agreements – Lesson 3 of 10 – Domestication: The Beginning of Needless Suffering

In this video from The Four Agreements Online Course, the objective is to become aware that human domestication is the beginning of needless suffering. Why? Because much of what we learn — especially about ourselves — isn’t the truth. Believing in lies leads us to limitations in our lives, to needless suffering and drama. The truth leads us to our authenticity, to happiness.

When we are children, the humans who take care of us program us with knowledge, and that knowledge is contaminated with lies. The first lie we learn to believe is that we are not what we “should” be. The fear of being rejected becomes the fear of not being good enough, and we learn to live our lives trying to satisfy other people. Eventually we become someone that we are not.

QUOTES from don Miguel Ruiz:

“In human domestication, you don’t have the opportunity to choose your beliefs. All the rules and values of your family and society are imposed on you. Just like a computer, all that information is downloaded into your head.”

“Before domestication, we don’t care what we are or what we look like. We never pretend to be what we are not. After domestication, we try to be good enough for everybody else, but we are no longer good enough for ourselves because we can never live up to our ‘image’ of perfection.”

“Needless suffering of all kinds is the result of misusing your word; it’s the result of believing in knowledge contaminated with lies. Some lies are innocent, and others are deadly – especially the lies you believe about yourself.”

QUESTIONS for you:

When you were a child, what did other people tell you about who you are, how you look, and how you “should” be?

What did others tell you about what you could, or could not, do with your life?
